What’s an “Accepted” Mason?

Between 1620 and 1682 there was a distinct body associated with the Masons Company of London called  the Acception. Into the Acception were received “persons who were not Operative Masons.” 
The Acception has sometimes been referred to as a Fraternity of Speculative Masons but there is no evidence that it was, in fact, ever referred to as such.
