The information found in the following  biography of the Ill. Leo B. Mark, Past Grand Master of all Masons in California and Hawaii, and former Personal Representative of the Sovereign Grand Inspector General , Supreme Council , Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite for California, is taken from the One Hundred Thirty-Ninth Annual Communication, GRAND LODGE, FREE AND ACCEPTED MASONS, CALIFORNIA - 1988.

It is the desire of the Personal Representative, The Ill. Robert Winter, 33rd degree, that each month, a biography of a Scottish Rite Member appear in the RIGHT WORD.

“Leo B. Mark, Scottish Rite’s former Personal Representative and Past Grand Master of all Masons in California and Hawaii,  is a mason that has displayed leadership and management qualities since he became a mason in the mid 1950’s and the leadership and management qualities have run parallel with Leo’s display of dignity, kindness, graciousness, compassion, fairness---and when appropriate, a sense of humor.
All who know Leo, know his friendly introduction; “ Hello, my name is Leo Mark “.
Throughout Leo B. Mark’s term of office as Grand Master, his thoughts and actions were always for the benefits and image of Freemasonry. His subtle sense of humor was a delight to hear and always came forth when it was needed.  Leo continually practiced the admonition given in the charge of the Fellowcraft Degree ; “ You are to judge with  candor, admonish with friendship, and reprehend with justice”.
Leo B. Mark was the first of Chinese ancestry to serve as Grand Master. Leo was born in 1922 in San Francisco. He received his education in public schools in San Francisco and upon completing grade school, attended San Francisco City College at San Jose State Univ. At the age of 22, in 1944 Leo married the charming and petite Lora Moy, now deceased---and from this union, five children were born, two boys and three girls. Leo now has four grandchildren.
Leo’s career was in law enforcement and he served as the Chief Investigator with the Santa Clara County’s District Attorneys Office.
Leo’s Masonic career commenced in 1955 when he received the degrees of Masonry in San Jose Lodge No. 10, serving as Master of that Lodge in 1964.  He has been a trustee of that Lodge since 1979. Recognizing his abilities, he was appointed a Grand Lodge Inspector in 1966 and continued serving in that capacity through October of 1975, relinquishing that post to accept the appointment as Grand Sword Bearer for the 1975-1976 Grand Lodge Year.
Leo became a member of the By-Laws Committee in 1977, Served on the Junior Grand Warden Selection Committee in 1978; the Lodge Resources Development Committee 1978-1984 and the Leadership Workshop Committee in 1984.
Closer to home, he was a member of the San Jose Masonic Temple Board from 1981 through 1984, serving as Vice-President of that Board1982 through 1984. Leo is a fifty years-plus member of his Masonic Lodge.
In Scottish Rite Freemasonry, Leo was also active, serving as Venerable Master of the San Jose Lodge of Perfection in 1968, the Commander of Kadosh in 1974, the Master of Kadosh in 1983, and the President of the San Jose Scottish Rite  Foundation in 1984. In 1975, Leo was coroneted a 33rd degree Honorary. He is a member of Asiya Temple of the Shrine and a member and Past Patron of Golden Oak Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, located in Los Gatos.
Leo is a recipient of the Honorary Legion of Honor, Order of the DeMolay.
Leo B. Mark has been active in community service, being the charter President of the Chinese American Citizen’s League of Santa Clara County, A Past President of the California District Attorney Investigator’s Association, and a member of the Advisory Board of the Santa Clara County Valley Police Academy.
Elected to the station of Junior Grand Warden in October, 1984, his progress through the Grand Lodge offices culminated in his election to the highest Masonic Office in our jurisdiction, that of Grand Master, at the Annual Communication of Grand Lodge held in October, 1987.
During Leo’s term of office and as he traveled throughout our jurisdiction, he continually stressed the theme he had chosen – “ The Time Is Now!“  , alerting the Brethren to the problems our Fraternity is experiencing and advising them that nothing can be accomplished by any Grand Master without the full and complete assistance and cooperation of the membership.
Masonry has been and is fortunate to have Leo B. Mark as a member of our craft and it has been my honor to serve as a volunteer at San Jose Scottish Rite with such an efficient honorable leader.”
