From the Wise Master (September, 2015)

So there I was at the July Scottish Rite “All Officer’s Meeting”, and I arrived early to beat the horrendous traffic that now exists on the highways in the mornings and evenings. I drove alone and had previously learned all the back roads from north county to get to get to S. R. on “the Hill”. At the meeting and after all the regular business was concluded, M.W. Ken Nagel blithely passed out his 25 page copies of what we had to do at the August Festive Board of Fellowship Program. “Oh boy!” I thought, “here it comes.”
While frightening at first, it was well presented and covered every step of the way in detail. As a junior officer of Rose Croix my previous duties were to pour the proper wine into the proper glasses without dropping the bottle or spilling any of the wine on the ladies and gentlemen's clothing, and I always did pretty good. But now I was “Wise Master” and I would be sitting up on the platform dias right in front of Grand Master, M.W. Russ Charvonia, and be called upon to make the Third Toast.
Well, I’ve got to tell you, I did OK. While scary at first, one of the things you learn, both in the Lodge as in Scottish Rite is to be able to step up to do what you have to do and then just do it. Of course practice helps, practice–practice–practice, and the whole evening program went well. A wonderful turnout, many dear friends, great introductions, fine food, And of course Great Toasts—and if I were to ever be so called on again I would want to repeat my Toast from memory.
