Brethren,

Having reached the end of another year, I feel  compelled to do somewhat of a “year in review.”
  • January began with the election of Officers for the 2008 Scottish Rite year and subsequent Installation where we were treated by an excellent presentation by Installing Officer by Ill. Wm Stovall, 33°, SGIG in California.  He will again be presiding at our Installation this year.
  • In February, we found it necessary to replace the boiler here in the building and on many occasions during that process, we strived to keep our staff, and all of you, warm.  It was a challenge indeed.  Also that month, we had our first e-waste recycling day in conjunction with San Jose Rainbow Assembly.
  • March brought St. Patrick’s day, Maundy Thursday, which is now called a Celebration of Remembrance and Renewal, and preparation for our Spring Reunion and .
  • In April we had a successful Spring Reunion and began preparation for the Fall Reunion.
  • May — Cinco DeMayo
  • June — saw us award our first San Jose Scottish Rite Scholarship to Hanna Bliden and recognize a number of ROTC students for their accomplishments.
  • July — Independence Day and summer slow down hit but we did take time to have our annual BBQ.
  • August — We were in full and complete summer slow down mode but we did have a stated meeting dinner.
  • September brought us our very first “Festive Agape” which was well attended and very interesting for all who were there.
  • In October we celebrated the “Feast of Tishri,” had the beginning of our “Fall Reunion.”  Beginning because we are committed to use the new Rituals for all our degrees and more preparation time was felt to be needed.
  • In November we celebrated Sofie Birk’s 100th Birthday as well as Thanksgiving
  • December began with the San Jose Scottish Rite Foundation underwriting a substantial cost for the Grand Lodge of California and its MSAP program followed by bringing back to San Jose Scottish Rite, the tradition of a very successful Christmas Party for the children and families of those enrolled in the Clinic.
If you needed a reminder of the year just past, there it was in very brief form.
Attendance at our stated meetings has increased by approx. 8% and our stated meeting dinners attendance have increased by 11% this year over last.  Let’s keep it growing!

It is now December 26th as I finalize this Rite Word for mailing.  As of today, the dues paying members of San Jose Scottish Rite are still in the minority, because only 48% have chosen to pay the 2009 dues.  If you are one of those, please write your check and send it today.  Remember that dues are due not later than January 1st.  If you have financial distress and feel that you need Masonic assistance, please contact me!

We do have many additional changes at Scottish Rite that will make the building more rentable, our own meetings and events more comfortable.  Please stay tuned.  If you have not been in attendance this year, we miss you.  Isn’t it time to come back?

Sincerely and fraternally,

Robert D. Rowan, Jr.
General Secretary
