By the time you read this article, the Spring 2013 Reunion will be history and our four candidates will be fully fledged members of the San Jose Scottish Rite. The Reunion was a lot of work and a big success. The Scottish Rite brothers who participated, whether on degree teams, working behind the scenes, or as candidates enjoyed themselves and accomplished our purpose. Thanks and congratulations to all involved. And to our Scottish Rite staff, including Bob Rowan and Angela Athans, whose efforts often go unnoticed or taken for granted.
We lost two of our best members in the last few months, Carl Mieske and Maury Dunbar. You have to think back a while to the days when Carl was our Organist and provided live music at our Reunions and other activities. Maury was our Orator for many years and put in many hours building our library. The San Jose Scottish Rite library is not just an accumulation of books. It is a focused and well-organized collection of works on Freemasonry, history, philosophy and other topics that are addressed in the Scottish Rite Degrees and are of interest to enthusiastic Masons.
There is a line in the Fourteenth Degree, addressed to the candidates, "Those of us who labor now for [Scottish Rite's] advancement will pass away but you will take our places and carry on the work." And so we will. But we are not a bunch of fungible flunkies among whom any one could do any of the jobs equally well. Each member is an individual, sharing his particular gifts and personality. We will miss those who have passed on and we look forward to working with the new Brothers who have recently joined us.

Daniel Doornbos, Commander
